Abstract

The Girls Accessing Teacher Education (GATE) project is designed to support female learning assistants in the process of becoming teachers in Sierra Leone, a profession where woman are under-represented. The Learning Assistant programme was designed by The Open University and is delivered in partnership with the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) as part of the DFID Girls’ Education Challenge Programme in Sierra Leone (GATE), led by Plan International UK. Local partners include international and national NGOs and the Teacher Training Colleges. As part of the resource base to support that project a set of materials focused on supporting pupils with special education needs were gathered and edited from existing Open Education Resources. These were deliberately chosen from resources that reflect the reality of student teachers, teachers, schools and systems in the global south operating in resource poor environments and as such could be of use beyond Sierra Leone.
