Embedding real world learning through inspirational guest speakers and the university as a live case study

In Responsible Business (BMGT2223) weekly guest speakers, and the University as a live case study, are used to frame student-centred learning, teaching and assessment for the module. Through this, students explore the responsible business practices of the University and engage with weekly guest speakers who bring the live case study into the classroom. Guest speakers are from University support functions, e.g. Estates, Procurement, HR, the Student Union, and other relevant organisations. Online lectures facilitate speakers’ participation.

Student feedback highlights that speakers are highly relevant to their learning, promote engagement and enhance module outcomes. Students’ interest and confidence is promoted through the sharing of relatable real-world experiences and perspectives that enrich the module content and Graduate Attributes.

Collaboration with guest speakers extends the Worcester Business School learning community and develops shared value for students, speakers, and staff. Guest speakers report that hearing the student voice enables them to gain new perspectives on operational activities and make improvement interventions which would not otherwise be possible. Online teaching encourages speakers’ participation as time commitment is reduced and no travelling is required; consideration of this will inform future module design.
This presentation will explore these aspects in more depth and contribute to pedagogic debates on inspirational approaches to learning, teaching and assessment which will support the University’s Learning and Teaching Strategy and goal of knowledge transfer. It will demonstrate the University’s golden triangle of education; well-motivated students, inspirational educators, and expert professional mentors who collaborate to deliver excellent learning experiences and outcomes.
