Abstract
Catalogue essay for the posthumous show by the First Nations artist Beau Dick - Devoured by Consumerism - which took place at White Columns gallery, New York in 2019. The essay discusses metaphors of consumption within the cosmology of the Kwakwaka’wak peoples of British Columbia and their relevance for environmental ethics. It focusses particularly on the rites of the Hamatsa secret society, of which Beau Dick was a high-ranking member.
