Abstract

This interview with the filmmaker Gideon Koppel provides new insights to his approaches to filming the rural landscape of west Wales in his critically acclaimed film, sleep furiously. Koppel reflects on his own relationship to the landscape in which he grew up (around Trefeurig, near Aberystwyth), his family’s status as exiles, his desire to escape, his ambivalence to fixed notions of ‘home’, and the feelings of melancholia that the remote but beautiful landscape now generates for him. Koppel also talks about his key influences, and, in particular, the ways in which poets and novelists have influenced his ways of seeing and representing landscapes.
