Abstract

Watchtowers are both symbols of repression and protection, of keeping something out and keeping something in. They stand guard against attack, become the centre point of surveillance or provide the first warning of danger. They can demarcate a perimeter, a border, an entrance or an exit. They can be simultaneously both sinister and comforting. Watchtowers are paradoxical symbols of how social structures are formed and maintained, from networks of CCTV to the early warning systems of forest fires. Watchtowers (Artist Pages) is a set of playful and speculative instructions for scanning the horizon.
