Abstract

Blackletter Garland Album artwork by Desdemona McCannon

I was commissioned by the folk musicians 'Hack Poets' Guild' to create artwork for their 2023 album 'Blackletter Garland' which consists of reworkings of songs in the Bodleian Library Broadsides archive.

As well as the cover artwork I made images for each song, which appeared in a booklet with the CD.

The images were also projected during live performances and appeared on merchandise for the band's tour.

My printmaking practice is informed by traditional folk art and popular print, in this case I worked in the visual idiom of the often woodblock prints found on cheap Broadside Ballad sheets from the 18th and 19th century.
