Students know what they can and mustn’t do with AI, what about us?

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is increasing rapidly, transforming Higher Education (Batista, Mesquita and Carnaz, 2024). Each week introduces new methods, tools, or approaches to well-established pedagogical, andragogical, and heutagogical practices that even the most committed academics find hard to keep up with (Baytas and Ruediger, 2025, p. 3 and Creely and Carabott, 2025). Over the past two academic years, the Learning Design for Teaching Excellence (LDTE) contributors have provided excellent examples of how AI and GenAI can be assistive, supportive, and, at times, revolutionary. While AI and GenAI tools are by no means fool-proof or entirely reliable (Xiaoyu, Zainuddin and Leng, 2025), many lessons have been learned, with much of this focusing on students' use of the technology.
This workshop will focus on how academics CAN use AI and GenAI throughout the academic year. The session aims to explore a wide range of applications, including:
• Planning modules and sessions.
• Enriching and updating teaching materials.
• Creating interactive quizzes, tasks, and activities from various sources.
• Designing Problem-Based / Case-Based Learning and Ethical Scenarios.
• Applying UDL principles for teaching, consolidation, and revision.
• Supporting reflective and critical evaluation of learning approaches.
• Developing assessment materials and formatting effective feedback.
Feel free to attend with worked examples of how AI and/or GenAI have either enhanced or modified your academic approaches, as everyone is learning together and sharing good practice is always welcome.
