Abstract

We’ve all heard the stereotype of women ‘staying at home to knit’ whilst men go off to war. But handicrafts played a much more significant role in the Second World War than is often reported. This talk explores how women used handicrafts to actively influence the outcome of the conflict. From creating disguises for spies, to hiding government secrets, not everything was as it ‘seam-ed’.
