Abstract

This chapter focuses on development in infancy, childhood and adolescence and re-visits, in the light of recent research finding, the (long-standing) debate of how relevant early experiences are to later human development and how individuals overcome adversity (resilience). The debate is highly relevant to social work practice and it will be supported by recent theoretical developments and research evidence from studies of individuals who suffered early deprivation and from longitudinal studies on attachment. The issues discussed in this chapter are intended as initial steps in exploring the complexities of human growth and development that the reader may wish to take further.
