Abstract

Maternity and neo-natal services, as is the case with most UK health services, systematically exclude members of Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities from their services.
Discrimination and a lack of basic knowledge among professionals, combined with hesitancy to engage on behalf of community members leads to unacceptable outcomes. This presentation highlights these issues, exploring wider social determinants and highlighting lived experiences from a number of recent research reports.
Recommendations, beginning with the inclusion of Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller issues in mandatory diversity and equality training programmes are made.
