Rights and The Rule of Nine

Many of the US’ historical and contemporary societal arrangements are the result of Supreme Court of the United States of America decisions. This lecture considered, in particular, the Warren, Burger and Rehnquist Courts (1953-2005) but also highlighted the “Founding Fathers’” positions regarding the role of the US’ third branch of government – the Judiciary – and the origins of judicial review. It reflected on the role of conservatism, liberalism, as well as prejudice and hope, in the creation, protection and denial of various forms of rights, especially civil, for those who have sought equality, life, liberty and happiness in the United States, such as African Americans, women, gay people, those with disabilities.
