Abstract:

This lecture considered the foundations of Japanese world outlook characterised by the School of National Learning (Kokugaku) which led to narratives of Japanese uniqueness. It also considered Japanese responses to the encroachment of the West, in particular the Americans, which precipitated the change from sakoku (“country in chains”) to “opening up”.
