Abstract
This introductory chapter sets the scene for this Routledge Handbook of Wetlands by discussing the value and significance of wetlands, and how ideas about wetlands have shifted over time. It acknowledges some of the tensions inherent in global wetlands conservation, and the need to manage wetlands for people and the environment in order to achieve sustainable development outcomes. Thereafter, it outlines the themes and issues addressed in different sections of this handbook.
