Navigating Neurodiversity in UK Medical Education: A scoping review

Neurodiversity (ND), the concept that cognitive differences are natural variations in human thinking, faces significant challenges in medical education. Tensions persist between pathologising these differences by emphasising deficits and addressing systemic barriers to inclusion. While neurodivergent individuals possess unique strengths, these are often overlooked due to rigid training frameworks and institutional biases. This UK-focused scoping review examines how ND is conceptualised in medical education research, identifies key themes, gaps, and sources of evidence, compares prevalence rates for selected neurotypes and analyses how the documented strengths and challenges of these neurotypes align with or challenge existing medical training frameworks.
