Abstract

Temporary or permanent, voluntary or forced: Migration has many facets. In search of freedom, security and better living conditions, many people leave their familiar homeland and venture on an often dangerous journey into the unknown in order to find a future worth living for themselves and their families.

Inspired by the International Centre for the Picture Book in Society (ICPBS) at the University of Worcester in England, illustrators from around the world have designed postcards on the theme of migration to show solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of people facing such daunting dangers today. So far, over 300 postcards have been created, showing a wide range of styles and moods. Sometimes abstract, sometimes realistic, funny or touching, surprising or thoughtful, and accompanied by short, very personal texts, Isol (Argentina), Marie-Louise Gay (Canada), Chris Riddell (GB), Stian Hole (Norway), Shaun Tan (Australia), Axel Scheffler (Germany/GB) and many other artists deal with the current topic.

The treasures that have "flown" to the ICPBS team since 2017 have already been exhibited in several countries. In the Hallway-Gallery of the International Youth Library, not only reproductions of all postcards are on display, also international picture books, non-fiction books and graphic novels from the library's own collection can be seen. In addition, ten illustrators have created short video clips in which they share their thoughts on the topic - especially for the Munich exhibition.
